As fall and winter seasons approach, so does the change in leaves, change in weather and change in our skincare. The air around us becomes drier: outside in the cold and indoors with heaters constantly running. In return, our skin barrier becomes compromised. Which results in dry, dehydrated, irritated and more sensitive skin.
Changing up your skincare routine in the colder months is crucial to maintaining your skin health. Here are some skincare tips to keep your skin happy and healthy in the cooler and drier months.
1. Heavier moisturizer
Adding a more emollient moisturizer before bed will help to maintain the skin’s natural moisture balance and repair a damaged epidermis. Moisturizers with soothing ingredients such as aloe or allantoin, provide additional benefits for more sensitized skin.
Hydrating serums are another great way to help your skin retain its moisture reservoir and will amplify the effects of the moisturizer you pair it with. The best ingredient for dehydrated skin is Hyaluronic Acid. HA is a humectant (which means it maintains and preserves moisture) and can hold 1,000 times it’s molecular weight in water. It has also been shown to cause a plumping effect in fine lines and wrinkles. HA serums are lightweight and can be used by all skin types.
3. Continue to wear SPF
Just because the sun isn’t shining as bright, doesn’t mean harmful UVA and UVB rays aren’t present. Continue to protect your investment in your skin, by wearing sunscreen year-round.
4. Reduce Chemical Exfoliation
Because of compromised barrier function in the skin, exfoliants can be more irritating during the colder months. Slightly decreasing the use of chemical exfoliants such as retinol or glycolic acid could be beneficial for a sensitized barrier.
5. Use a Lip + Eye Moisturizer
If this isn’t a part of your daily routine already, now is the time to start! The delicate tissue in the eye and lip area are affected just like the rest of the face and will need extra attention from hydrating and moisturizing ingredients.
